Hello All, I need your help! (Sorry this is kinda long)
My Wife and I are currently re-purposing our basement from a storage / rarely used work out area to a game room. We currently just use the dinning room for gaming, but are excited to make this change.
With that said, I need some input from you!
------------------------------------------
First some background:
We have the floor picked out. It will be foam puzzle flooring under a red carpet. See foam here: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Step-Interlocking-Flooring-Protected/dp/B00BN3OTQ4
We already have a table from IKEA with two leaves that expand it. See here: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20182315/
We have 2 Kallax 4x4 Ikea shelves Black-Brown along with 2x4 Black-Brown, & 1 2x4 Yellow if needed. See here: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30275861/#/10275862
We also have a 3 door tall Besta unit with wood/glass doors from Ikea that I cannot find a good pic of at this time.
The room kinda looks like this (Forgive the bad drawing. Hopefully it translates well: ([ = side rooms, and ^ is the entry to the basement) _______________ [ | | | | | | | | _____| | ]Bath | [ _____|_____| | ]Side | | |Room| |_^_|____ | Entrance
Clearly we are both very much into board games, but also: - My wife is a fan of the following: Harry Potter-Hufflepuff, Lego, Stars, Legend of Zelda, Pikman, Toadette & Toad, Lord of the Rings, Animal Crossing, & Harvest Moon. Her favorite color is Red.
- I am a fan of the following: Penguins (any and all), Pokemon + Pokemon Go - Instinct, Wrestling, Yoshi, Zelda, HP - Hufflepuff (lot less than my wife), Hockey-also Penguins, Marvel, LOTR, Elder Scrolls, Ancient Rome, Classic Rock. Halo & Sonic were also big for me at one time. My favorite Color is Yellow.
Current items that can be used in room: Yoshi Plush - Yellow, White, Light Blue, Pink (more colors will be added) Pokemon Plush - Vaporeon & Piplup Pokemon mini figures - Eevee, Sylveon, Pikachu, & Oshawott Pokemon Go - Instinct Pillow Hufflepuff Banner Marvel large photo print with almost all characters (excludes X-men and F4, because Marvel is silly ) Agent Coulson - Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D pop figure Pittsburgh Penguins Banner
That's all I can think of at the moment. ------------------------------------------
So here is what I need from you:
1. Wall color choices. -As I said, the furniture is dark and the carpet is red.
2. Reasonably priced ideas for decor: (Less than $30 preferred, Less than $50 OK, except on really rare occasion)
3. Any ideas we haven't thought of:
So far I have found: Legend of Zelda Triforce Lamp: http://www.gamestop.com/collectibles/toys/the-legend-of-zelda-tri-force-light/129063?cid=fds_10000777&CAWELAID=120192760000042270&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=14803867802&CATCI=aud-132933277442:pla-75249455775&CATARGETID=120192760000095892&cadevice=c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIneWInuKk1gIVk7jACh0S1wLxEAYYASABEgJauPD_BwE
Now fateful travelers the task falls to you. Can you rise to the challenge in helping us design the best game room possible!
Thank you in advance for your awesome ideas and helping this come to life!

I really hope we can get some awesome ideas through this thread. Everyone's help would be extremely appreciated.
I'll play along. Someone has to go first!
I'd go with a neutral gray on the walls; then, anything you hang will pop as far as color.
Floating shelves are reasonably priced and getting ones with a matte black finish will allow your treasures to shine.Yard sales are good places to find this sort of thing, too, and a new coat of paint does wonders on used shelves of all kinds.
Contact your local theater to see if they have any nerdish movie posters available.
Shadowboxes (again, yard sale or check Michael's/JoAnn fabrics/online) with games are cool, too, and the games get to be the star.
Some fun examples here: http://whatgamedoyouwanttoplay.com/settlers-of-catan-gifts/ -- love the Catan minimalist prints and the Catan clock
Search "board games shadowbox" or "board game decor" on Google.
Maybe a big vinyl cutout of a gaming phrase or Wordle that you like: Roll the dice; it builds character. Your move; make it count. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. After the game, the king and the pawn go in the same box. Life is a game. Play hard. Some of my best buddies are meeples. Keep calm and game on!
Thank you very much for your submission. I like the ideas of the gray walls, shadowboxing a game, and the vinyl prints.
I really appreciate you taking the time to read and respond.
Still looking for a lot more input!
How's the lighting? You'll want some good lighting for the table. Your eyes may be young enough to get by without it now, but Future You will thank Current You for good lighting soon enough.
Hey all!
Just an update. We have painted the walls a light gray. So now all we really need are more good decor ideas to fill the room with. We also got a surround sound system to add some ambiance to the room.
How's the room situated for drinks & snacks?
Unless the kitchen is really close by, I'd want a games room to have convenient coffee/tea/cold drinks, so that folks could get a refill without having to get out of earshot.
The room is in the basement and the kitchen is on the main floor directly at the top of the stairs. We were considering having a little cart/shelf with drinks on it, but it wouldn't hold much. A mini fridge might also work, but again the fridge is at the very top of the stairs.

I put game pieces (dominos, dice, checkers, marbles) in clear glass vases to use as book ends to help hold games up. Bonus is you can usually find these at goodwill for a buck.
