I still like my idea better.  Instead of a lanyard, you get a three foot length of chain.

Like the Maester chains in GoT.  Imagine going through your life with 5-10lbs of chain around your neck. :-)

Wait, you mean you don’t already?

Mayhaps we can just get a really big forehead tattoo that can be scanned from several feet away.  A big sign around our necks would just be silly.

I’m also picturing a lone table in an ICC side room with like 8  people sitting in chairs spaced out along the walls yelling instructions out to the Gamemaster at the table.  It’s ridiculous enough for me to want to play, even if it’s Monopoly or Risk.  “No 6’s!!!!  Yeah, just go ahead scatter everything off the board and onto the floor for me, sir.”

Social distancing is almost impossible at gencon.
just look at the vendor hall, the food court, the gaming tables, the bus shuttles, the hotels...
and we don’t even take into account if publishers will come, some of them are from countries with no fly law due to covid...
the only way i see gencon happening is if that whole pandemic is over or nearly over and not just in usa but overall

I was looking on the Paizo boards for some clues as to whether Paizo would be at Gen Con 2020, and COO Jeff Alvarez posted this interesting economic fact about Gen Con's impact on Indy:
"Gen Con brings in over $70M in business for the city of Indy and for comparison, that's more business than all the Colts home games generate, so having or canceling this show will have huge ramifications for both Gen Con, as well as the restaurants and hotels in DT Indy."
Never knew about those numbers, but they're pretty eye-opening.
This is why the Governor or the Mayor will hold off as long as possible before banning Gencon from happening. Way too economically important to the voters who will decide if they get another term in office.

It is also like I said, it will be easier to cancel an event close to time for it than to cancel it way in advance and have to get if started again if the worst doesn't come to pass.

Which is why we are stuck doing the hardest thing of all: Waiting.

View of badges takes folks to less than 6 foot distance.

Not if you make the badges the size of a stop sign. You just have to think outside the box, right?   We can all walk around looking like Flavor Flav...Yeah, Boi!!!!!

You now get personalized T-Shirts with a QR code on the front. One for each day of your badge, each uniquely QR-coded to a given day (so no cheating).

You missed the point. Convention security has to change to allow distance.

Convention center security is such that they restrict doors and funnel traffic such that you are always within 3 feet of a security person when they check your badge. Think about how only part of the doors to the exhibit hall are opened. Think about the escalator to the underpassage to the stadium is choked through a 3 foot wide path. etc.

They should show up in support of GenCon due to the economic impact.

That would be nice. It'd certainly be a nice shot of hope that Gen Con will happen.

Labor Day weekend could also be an option - the Colts have away games scheduled for that weekend and the ones before and after it

Eleven days after Origins?  That could be hard on the big companies that do both and the the smaller vendors as well.  It'd force a good number of people to choose between the two I'd wager.

Dragon Con's that weekend as well, though I don't know how much competition there would be between the two cons.

Hey we're living in a *censored* storm.  Who knows if GC decides they won't use Lucas Oil for event space you could hold it on a home game weekend. Who knows what the hotel situation/priority would be

Regarding security checkpoints, one could take a page from the Costco playbook and put up a clear, rigid plastic screen between the security person and the line. Funnel the crowd down, mark off spaces on the approach to indicate proper distance, and have them hold their badge up to the screen before passing through.

How many people can this support per hour? Say 3 seconds per person would give 1200 per hour or 600 each way. Be interesting in seeing how many checkpoints would be needed to support the number of attendees.

You'd probably need dedicated entrances and exits for the Exhibit Hall, as well, and maybe an occupancy limit. It'd wind up looking like a bigger version of how Fantasy Flight used to do their booth.

I don't even want to think about how long the morning rush would take.

The sooner they cancel Gen Con, the sooner we can hopefully get refunds from Marriott.

It’s a lost cause

Now that you mention it, as long as we're talking about the adjustments needed to run GC in 2020, is there a Murder Hornet action plan? They could issue flamethrowers and Taurus Judge revolvers for the staff.
